Welcome to our restaurant!
We serve traditional and tasty Finnish food made by ourselves from start to finish. Classics over the years include Puerto Rico's Pan with its secret spices. Our 65-seat restaurant has an atmospheric bar, dining room and, in summer, a backyard terrace.
With us, you will experience a piece of Tampere's history and traditional taste sensations. Ohranjyvä is a block restaurant for the whole nation, where you are welcome to thirst, overcome hunger and perhaps meet a familiar face. We offer weekly entertainment with bingo and quizzes. Once a month you can also experience the legendary Läskisoosi Day, and on the first Friday of every month we celebrate Steak Friday, which you should always prepare for in advance with a table reservation. From time to time, our restaurant also hosts live music. That's for sure that you'll always enjoy your time in Ohranjyvä!
The history....
In March 1965, master pastry chef Jussi Linkosuo opened Restaurant Ohranjyvä in the former store apartment on Näsilinnankatu, just before the first Ice Hockey World Championships held in Finland. Barley grain was one of the first beer restaurant experiments in Finland, and it immediately gained popularity among Tampere residents as a cozy and intimate place to socialize.
The reputation of Ohranjyvä soon spread outside Tampere as well. Considered a symbol of the liberation of Finnish restaurant life, the Puerto Rico Pan attracted people from further afield to experience exotic taste sensations. Ohranjyvä was also made famous by familiar TV media faces and journalists who enjoyed their "o-studio". The drinks on tap were tasty and over the years the slogan became "One hundred steps from Hämeenkatu, two hundred steps back..."
Ohranjyvä is one of the oldest restaurants in Tampere, and its concept has remained almost the same throughout. Next year the restaurant will celebrate its round and respectable 60th anniversary!
The legendary restaurant has had several owners. The current owner is a completely private enterprise RARE Tampere Oy, whose entrepreneur Iida Maria Ozan herself works as a restaurant owner and restaurant manager in Ohranjyvä. It is important for the owner to preserve the traditions of the place, but to keep up with the times enough to bring the restaurant to its former glory.
